The following paper examines the themes and symbols in this work and also discusses other elements as well. Lord of the Flies In Goldings novel we are presented with the truth of how people, primarily men perhaps, would behave if there was no society to keep them in line. If mankind is offered a non structured society they will revert to animalistic and violent ways for society in essence, keeps a rein on such realities, forcing people to follow rules for the safety of all. But, despite our obvious, or presumed, civilized world we are inherently creatures who will revert to vicious ways if given a chance. In Goldings novel we can also see how there are many symbolic elements. For example, the figure of Piggy is the symbol of reason, the symbol of a civilized society and he is ultimately killed by the force of the primitive. There is the conch which symbolizes peace and order and rules and society. It is seen as a tool of power and is stolen and misused. The character of Ralph is deeply associated with the conch and he is clearly the stable rational order, but by himself he is nothing in the face of the nature of mankind. The Lord of the Flies is essentially the pig head on a stake and this symbolizes the evil passion of the boys, the symbols of mankind. It is feared and it is evil, but it is later embraced it seems by those who have lost all sense of reason and logic. Roger is a boy who embodies selfish desire and ultimate power.
