Bullock states that among the list of Hitlers primary talents were his "mastery of the irrational," as well as his "insight into the weaknesses of his opponents" (Bullock 806). Hitler was an opportunist who was successfully in pursuing his own objectives to the detriment of the German people (Bullock 806). Examination of William Goldings novel Lord of the Flies shows that the character of Jack demonstrates the traits that Bullock attributes to Hitler. Like Hitler, Jack is an opportunist who takes advantage of his opponents weaknesses in order to destroy them. The Lord of the Flies concerns a castaway group of British school boys who survive on a tropical island without any adult supervision. They degenerate into savagery in a relatively short amount of time primarily due to the influence of one boy--Jack. In this novel, Golding used this situation to dramatize defects in basic human nature, but also to illustrate defects in society, as well (Wheeler 3). Through the character of Jack, Golding shows how leaders, such as Hitler, can establish their hold over others. From the beginning of the novel and their arrival on the island, like Hitler, Jack courted power. He wanted to be the leader, but the boys elected Ralph rather than Jack, but he was placed in charge of hunting. Jack then pushes this role to the limit, getting more and more boys to join him in an increasing lust for blood. At first, the boys hunted for food, but, under Jacks leadership, they start to enjoy killing simply for the sake of killing, as Jack taps into and unleashes the basic savagery that exists within all the boys except for Ralph, Piggy and Simon.
