The classic book "Lord of the Flies" by William Gerald Golding was first published in 1959. Although the book
was a best seller and ultimately received a Nobel Prize for literature, it has been the center of controversy and has actually been banned at various times and locations since
its publication. The reasons given were varied and ranged from the fact that the book included profanity, references to sex, and violence. An underlying reason in many of
these cases, however, was obviously that the book depicted the fact that young children can be cruel and inhumane and that they can, in fact, even be killers. Despite
these objections, "The Lord of the Flies" can be used quite constructively among high school students to teach lessons not only about such literary concepts as symbolism but also about
the importance of human relationships. Boyd and Bailey (2009) emphasize that while censorship is typically enacted out of the "out of
the noblest of reasons-most often with the idea of protecting young people from something that someone finds offensive", what it actually does is impede on our constitutional rights. "The
