given the right circumstances, we might lose our veneer of civilization and turn savage, just as the boys did. In this brief paper, Ill trace Simons character development, and
argue that as the "Christ" figure on the island, he had to die. Discussion Simon is the only character on the island who succumbs neither to savagery nor
despair. He remains gentle and optimistic, and seems to be at peace with himself and with the jungle; he goes into it to find a place to be alone,
and discovers a clearing with a "cushion" of matted reeds on which he can sit comfortably and enjoy being with nature. His desire to be alone reinforces his image
as a Christ-like figure; his solitude calls to mind Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He also picks fruit for the "littluns" demonstrating his quality of caring for others.
As the book moves on the boys start choosing up sides (Ralph vs. Jack); they also become frightened of a "Beast" they suspect is on the island with them.
One of the littluns scares them all by suggesting that the Beast lurks in the ocean by day and comes onto the land at night: "He says the beast comes
out of the sea" (5,81). Simon is the only one who realizes that the Beast is not real, but is instead the savagery that lives inside all of us.
This is about half-way through the book, and Ralph is beginning to lose hope; he also has trouble concentrating. Its Simon who helps him through this by talking
