probably good (The secret sharer), we are faced with a protagonist who has acted in a dishonorable manner. His cowardice haunts him and he attempts to escape from it, only
to lose his life in the end. This paper answers several questions about the novel. Discussion Briefly, Jim is a young seaman who, through a combination of circumstances, finds himself
aboard the Patna; when it begins to take on water, he and the rest of the crew abandon the passengers to their fate and abandon ship, assuming that the ship
is lost and their actions will never be known (Conrad, 2007).. But the Patna is saved, Jim is judged a coward, and he moves further and further east, taking various
jobs and moving no when his past becomes known. He finally winds up in Patusan, where it seems his secret is safe (Conrad, 2007). Unfortunately, Gentleman Brown, a pirate,
arrives in Patusan and guesses Jims secret; he and Cornelius, the father of Jewel, whom Jim loves, band together to ruin him (Conrad, 2007). Brown and his men attack the
camp of Dain Waris, the son of Jims best friend, Doramin. Jim, realizing that he cannot escape his cowardice, goes to Doramin, who kills him. He has decided to give
up his life in payment of his guilt (Conrad, 2007) The questions we want to consider are these: Why did Jim jump from the Patna? How does he react to
the realization of his cowardice? Is he selfish? Does he have a moral obligation that he did not fulfill? Did he make the right decision when he let Gentleman Brown
