way in which the writers background is linked to the play and its performance. Overview The play is a story of passion, and what can happen when that passion is
denied. Here, the love between Leonardo and The Bride is so overwhelming that, on her wedding day, Leonardo comes and takes her away. The Bridegroom, urged on by his Mother
("The Mother"), and accompanied by many of their neighbors, goes after the runaway couple. The play ends with The Bridegroom and Leonardo killing each other, and The Bride, The Mother
and the others left to mourn. Its a simple story, easily told, but Lorca makes of it something so intense that it becomes a tragedy for all time; a play
with the stature of Romeo and Juliet and the longing of the classic Phantom of the Opera. Lorca got his inspiration for the play from a newspaper account of a
similar incident, telling us that these powerful emotions are common to all humanity (Graham-Luj?n and OConnell 240). The Characters Reading down the list of characters reveals something very interesting:
there are only three characters who actually have names, Leonardo, Death and The Moon, though we can argue that the last two are not really characters in the sense Leonardo
is. Everyone else is listed by their title, such as The Bride, The Bridegroom, The Mother, The Mother-in-Law, The Brides Father and so on (Lorca). This gives rise to several
