are both stories about observation, but they are completely different, and the difference is unsettling for people who can remember the world Updike describes. This paper discusses the meaning of
Updikes story, and how DeLillo uses perspective and point of view to develop his story. Discussion A&P is the shorthand for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, a chain
of supermarkets located mostly in the East; yes, Virginia there is an A&P and some of the stores are still in business. The story is simplicity itself: three girls in
bathing suits come into the store, leaving the teenage clerk, Sammy, breathless. But the manager, Lengel, following company policy, says they cannot come in with their shoulders bare. They object
they are just buying one item, but he says hes sorry, but its company policy and they have to leave. The clerk rings up their single purchase, then quits his
job and goes after them. By the time he gets to the street, of course, theyve vanished and his gesture is useless. The key to the story is in the
line that he knew what he was doing was silly, but "it seems to me its fatal not to go through with a gesture once youve started it" (Updike). The
story is gentle and brings back memories of a different world, where a teen age boy could be flattened by a girl in a bathing suit; today, shed have to
