those who feel that wealth should be evenly distributed and wonder how a rich man --or even someone who is middle class-- can eat a steak dinner while children are
starving in third world countries. Of course, this occurs every day and activists do not stop eating. Still, it is an issue of conscience that people wrestle with. What is
really fair? On the other hand, there are those who see the same starving children but also see that the solution is not a distribution issue and rather, the more
industrialized nations must help the countries that are not doing so well. In other words, the problem is bigger than what people can fix and the solution is not to
take wealth away from the people and give it to the poor, but to teach the poor how to become wealthy. In examining utopian literature and political paradigms, there is
much attention paid to this idea of redistributing the wealth. There had been Robin Hood, but the legend is really not something that creates a utopia. It is a band-aid
and fodder for more serious discussion. Still, the Robin Hood forest is something that one can say is markedly closer to a perfect society than one stratified by wealth.
In looking at two classic works--Looking Back by Edward Bellamy and The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels--there are many questions that loom. Each of these works create a perfect
world as the authors see it. Yet, while both authors agree that wealth should be distributed and the government should play a large role in the affairs in the people,
