1. Introduction The airline industry has undergone a great deal of change over the last decade. The events of 9/11 created a decline that shook the industry, SARs hit the demand for travel to Asia. Now there is a global economic crisis with the current credit crunch which is having a negative impact on demand. In all cases airlines have had to adapt in order to survive, some have been more successful than others; some airlines have failed for protection under bankruptcy regulation and carried on trading, others have simply folded. In a time when there are likely to be high levels of price sensitivity it would appear that the low cost airlines, such as Easyjet and Germanwings will be well placed to compete as they provide a good that is at a lower price point which is, theoretically, demanded by the market (Nellis and Parker, 2006). However, there is a falling demand across all areas of the industry, and firms have to adapt (Mint\berg et al, 2003). When undertaking their panning the current situation is important, but there is also a need to consider potential influences that will impact on the airline industry in the future, otherwise long term planning will have the potential to ignore factors that could impact heavily on the industry, and failing to plan or allow for some of these factors could mean the different to success and failure (Mintzberg et al, 2003). Therefore, to consider the potential of these two low cost airlines the paper will look at the potential influences over the next 10 - 20 years, assess how the firms may be able to deal with these changes and consider their current performance. 2.
