However, longer life doesnt always equate to better life, and advocates for the elderly are fighting to make things such as elder abuse known to the public; they are also trying to improve conditions in long-term care facilities. This paper discusses potential improvements to a hypothetical long-term care facility in Massachusetts, based upon the results of a survey of residents in such facilities. Discussion Although we think of the residents in long-term care facilities as elderly, its important to recognize that not all patients are old; sometimes young people need long-term care to recuperate from operations, injuries or accidents. Therefore the survey that was done included people in three age groups: below 20, 20-50, and above 50. While some of the results varied widely, there were more similarities than we might have expected. The decisions that need to be made with regard to designing and furnishing the facility include whether or not the rooms should have balconies; whether there should be an internal kitchen or if the food should be catered; whether there should be a permanent pharmacist on staff to dispense medicines or if there should be automatic dispensers; whether or not there should be transport for residents to local outings; if there should be a library, TV room and sports area; whether there should be phone lines to each patient; whether there should be Internet access; whether there should be an audio system installed; and how the facility should be painted and furnished. It seems that the most reasonable approach to this question is to look at the residents preferences and use them as the guideline.
