urban environmental scene in 2050 appears to be greatly similar to that of 48 years previous, that which existed in 2002. The paradox is that the apparent similarities serve
to mask the fact that there have been great strides in the past half century in those efforts to attain sound management of disposal of urban solid waste. Certainly
the population is higher and the city contains greater land area through annexation of outlying areas throughout the ensuing five decades. The fact that there is little change in
the volume of urban solid waste over the 50 year period translates to immense progress in the management of that waste. "Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle" This buzzphrase of the 1990s never did quite take hold among consumers, though it was useful at the time in raising
awareness of the principles of reduction of waste. The idea seemed to be such a simple one, but it eluded manufacturers for years. When the idea did appear
to be taking hold was not in response so much to consumer pressure to reduce solid waste, but rather resulted in large part from the changes in business that occurred
during the late 1980s and the decade of the 1990s. This was a time that globalization reigned among the worlds largest businesses and
developing nations sought steady influx of foreign direct investment. Businesses were forced to operate as efficiently as possible and set about peeling off layers of inefficiently as surely as
