the aspects of the human condition seen in his work is that of loneliness. Despite the fact that his stories are ultimately, in plot and focus, on something else, there
always seems to be the essence of human loneliness in his stories. The following paper examines 6 of his short stories and illustrates the theme of loneliness within. The stories
discussed are Old Man at the Bridge, Hills Like White Elephants, A Clean Well-Lighted Place, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Cat in the Rain and A Natural History of the Dead.
Loneliness in the Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway In many ways, if one researches the life of Hemingway, one can see that
he was a relatively lonely man. He went through many marriages, drank a great deal, and often kept himself isolated in many respects. In looking at just one element of
this truth one author examines the relationship that Hemingway and the actress Marlene Dietrich had, a relationship of powerful love but never sexual intimacy. Much of their communication was in
letters and "The letters cover everything from the emptiness Hemingway felt upon completing a novel to their shared loneliness" (Parker). His own
perceptions, his own loneliness, were written into his work, or as an individual critiquing his work many decades ago stated, "From 1921 to 1938 it has been the same short
story, love and pity and pride and loneliness concealed in a brief reportage of the cruel facts" (Jack). In essence, there can be little doubt that the theme of loneliness
