loneliness, and might reflect the state of mind of someone trying to adjust to living in the U.S. This paper examines the story and discusses why it is so effective
in depicting the feelings of lonely people. Discussion Like many of Hemingways stories, "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" is deceptively simple on the surface. Two waiters in a caf? are talking
about a deaf old man whos sitting outside, drinking well into the night, as is his custom. The younger of the two would like him to go home so he
can leave as well, and get back to his wife. The older waiter doesnt see any harm in the old many staying as long as he likes. At first, a
reader thinks the story is about the old man. We read that he tried to commit suicide that week by hanging himself, but his niece found him and cut him
down. Now hes taken up his customary routine. Only gradually does the reader become aware that the real story is that of the two waiters, and their very different lives.
The younger, as noted above, wants the old man to leave: "I wish he would go home. I never get to bed before three oclock. What kind of hour is
that to go to bed?" (Hemingway). His colleague says "He stays up because he likes it" (Hemingway). To which the younger one replies, "Hes lonely. Im not lonely. I have
a wife waiting in bed for me" (Hemingway). He is obviously in a hurry to get home and make love to her, and he resents being kept there, especially by
someone for whom he has nothing but contempt. His dismissive attitude towards the old man is clearly shown when the man orders another drink. "The waiter who was in a
