is not easy, as a teenage male, to assimilate into a new technologically advanced country. Although my knowledge of the English language began in Thailand, language remains a barrier. The
language problem, as with my entire experience in the U.S., consists of aspects that are both positive and negatives-good and bad, yin and yang. For example, the weather is
beautiful, and I will always remember my excitement at seeing my first snowfall, but the weather is also very cold. As this suggests, there is the excitement of new experiences,
but also there is the ache of loneliness and longing to see my family. "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway presents the experience of one lonely individual who finds
a way to cope with the apparent meaningless of human existence. This is a short story with which I can truly sympathize with as Hemingway obviously understands loneliness and longing.
Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899. His mother was an opera singer prior to marry a doctor, Clarence E. Hemingway, who taught his son to love
hunting, fishing and the outdoor life in general (Gascoigne). In 1918, during World War I, he joined an Italian volunteer ambulance unit, was wounded and twice decorated by the Italian
government (Gascoigne). Hemingway drew upon this war experience in several of his most famous novels, such as A Farewell to Arms. After the war, Hemingway returned to the U.S.,
but did not remain. In 1921, he moved to Paris where he worked as a journalist for the Toronto Star newspaper. In Paris, he made friends with many of the
most notable writers of the era (Gascoigne). However, while Hemingway had friends, he also understood the pain of loneliness, as his short story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" makes clear.
