confronted with very different stories. Each story revolves around a different sort of character, is told in very different ways, and ultimately tells a very different sort of message. But, at the same time the older waiter in Hemingways story and Emily in Faulkners story both share an understanding and relationship with loneliness. The following paper examines this perspective. Loneliness: Faulkner and Hemingway In Hemingways story the tale essentially revolves around the old man that the two waiters are watching and discussing as he sits in the restaurant/caf? when they should be closing up. They examine this lonely man who apparently always seems drunk and they discuss what they have heard about him and what his life was like before he became what seems to be the shell of a man sitting in this location nursing a drink. The younger waiter has no clue what it is like to be older, to perhaps be lonely, while the older waiter obviously has some sense of empathy for the old man. In Faulkners story one only sees the character of Emily from the perspective of the narrator who tells about how the town has always seen Emily. Emily, though seen as a strong icon and symbol of the community, is also presented in a manner that makes the reader see what a sad and lonely life she has likely led. This is generally inferred although there are also elements of the story itself that speak of her loneliness, a loneliness that ultimately seems to have led to madness as well. As noted, both stories are very different, as can be seen, and one of the main differences comes in the position of the narrator.
