cities; both are capital cities, both are seen as metropolitan cities and in terms of location both are financial centres in strong economic and politically influential countries that often find
they are competing. In order to assess the progress, potential, differences or any other aspect of a city the comparison with a nearby similar city can be valuable. 2. Characteristics
of Paris and London Paris and London have similar characteristics, not only are they both major cities, with similar road and rail links to the rest of their countries, they
are also home to a metro, or under ground train system, both have a similar style river flowing through them and is the location of the national parliament and the
financial capitals of their respective countries. However, there are also many difference. The population in Paris is increasing despite the population density being one of the highest in the western
world. In 1990 there was a population of 10,291,851 in the Metropolitan Paris area, this increased to 11,174,743 by 1999 (Wikipedia, 2005). The city of Paris has seen some movement
onto the suburbs, in 1990 the population was 2,152,423, and decreased to 2,125,246 in 1999 but increased to an estimated population of 2,142,800 by 2004 (Wikipedia, 2005). This reflects the
