fortunate enough to have been supported in her artistic endeavors by her parents, who were relatively successful. Her work was inspired by many things, not the least of which was
her own cultural heritage. With these facts in mind the following paper examines her piece Les Fetiches, how early art may have influenced this piece, and how she may have
struggled to get her art noticed due to the fact she was a woman and an African American. Lois Mailou Jones: Les Fetiches: Analysis, Influence and History Les
Fetiches is perhaps one of her earlier pieces, but it is also considered one of her great pieces. One author notes, "She designed African-style masks and in 1938 painted "Les
F?tiches," which depicts masks in five distinct ethnic styles" (The African American Registry). The painting was actually produced during her first time to Paris and was something of a divergence
from her normal landscapes and portraits (Mint Museum of Art). With this particular painting "she surprised her academy instructors with an abstract portrayal of African masks....a brilliant presage of African-based
imagery she would explore later in her career" (Mint Museum of Art). In terms of analysis it is a painting that reflects her particular ability to utilize color and
balance. While it is clearly a painting that diverged from her other work at the time, and also many of her works to come, it demonstrated how, according to one
critic, God had given her a gift of understanding structure as well as design in a way that enabled her to present textile patterns that carry "the color to victory"
