Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 5 page report
discusses the assumptions made in a hypothetical argument
regarding Waymarsh State College who go to their state
legislature to protest budget cuts. The “logic” used by the
legislature in ignoring the students was that since only 200
students protested at the capitol, the remaining 11,800 students
must not care about either the issue or their education. The
argument presented does not follow the “rules” of a logical
argument and presents a conclusion that is clearly not warranted.

The other 12,000 students evidently werent concerned about their education; they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since the group who did not protest is far more
numerous, it is more representative of the states college students than protesters. Therefore, the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students." The assumptions made in a
hypothetical argument regarding Waymarsh State College students are patently false and therefore result in an argument that does not follow the "rules" of logic. In other words, it may
make assertions that are appropriate for a forum such as an editorial or opinion page in the newspaper however it is not a convincing or even well-crafted argument. Certainly,
its logic is inherently flawed which, in turn, leads one to question the merit or validity of the argument in general. The gist of the statement made was that
because only 200 of Waymarsh State College traveled to the state capitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs, it must not be an
issue important to the vast majority of the students and, therefore, the legislature need not truly be concerned about the impact of their proposed budget cuts in education. Basics of
a Sound and Logical Argument To assume that the students who did not make the trip to their state capitol "evidently werent concerned about their education" negates the intention of
the collective studentbody since other factors are not considered. Perhaps all of the studentbody raised money to send as many representatives to the capitol as possible and the cost
of such a trip allowed for them to only send 200 students. Perhaps, those 200 students already lived in the capitol city and were therefore willing to speak for
