of a program. The logic model describes the linkages among resources, activities, audiences, output, and short-, intermediate-, and long-term outcomes that are related to a specific situation(McCawley, 2010; McNamara, 2010).
In other words, the logic model shows the flow of processes and materials that produce the desired results. The model begins with planning and carries through to evaluation of the
outcomes. When a problem or situation has been described using a logic model, critical measures of performance can be used to evaluate the program. Logic models can be described narratively
but it is clearer to use some sort of graph, such as a chart with columns and rows. The logic model basically demonstrates a series of cause-and-effect relationships between and
among the elements included. It is a systems approach that communicates the steps along the path of achieving a specific result. There are different elements in the logic model. Inputs
include what is invested, such as time, money, equipment, etc. Outputs reflect that is done such as workshops and publications and who the program reaches, such as customers and participants.
There are there types of outcomes. A short-outcome may change knowledge or skills; a medium outcome may change behaviors, practices, and policies, and a long outcome may change the
environment itself (McCawley, 2010). One of the challenges of planning programs and evaluating the outcomes is the limited amount of control the planner has over a variety of
complex environments. For instance, if one were developing a program to reduce substance abuse among teenagers, it is not possible to control all of the external variables that have a
great deal of influence over this population. Logic models can address this challenged because they describe the concepts that must be considered to achieve the goal. McLaughlin and Jordan
