especially in comparison to some of Tennysons other works such as Crossing the Bar and The Eagle, it is also one which encompasses a wide range of perspectives and ideas.
However, this does not necessarily mean that the persona is presenting a balanced or rational viewpoint on life: in fact, one could say that the opposite is true. He seems
very much driven by emotion, by somewhat melodramatic responses to events in his life, and by fantasy and imagination. In addition,
the structure of the poem makes it evident that the narrators musings take place within a brief time-frame - it is as if we are listening to him speak in
"real time" - and this emphasises the disjointed, mercurial, complex nature of his thought processes. The student might also mention the use of specific verse structures here. The anger which
is such an integral element of the poem is exemplified not only by the content, but also by the form: we see this in the use of the two-line stanzas,
giving a sense of changeability and choppiness to the text. This is reiterated in the contrast between flowing, gentle
expression in the sections of the poem where the persona deals with happy memories, and the sharpness and abruptness of those where he is brought back to the present, and
to his anger. Central to this emotion is the fact that the narrator has been jilted by his lover, who has taken instead someone whom the narrator considers common and
inferior in comparison to himself - he refers to him as "coarse", "clay" a "clown", and so on.
