really more than just school, a concept important to keep in mind when reading through John Lockes (1693) Thoughts Concerning Education. He begins his work by saying that he, as a philosopher, had been consulted by so many people who profess not to know how to breed their children, and that the early corruption of youth has become a general complaint (1693). He wrote about that in the latter part of the seventeenth century and three hundred years later, parents continue to wrestle with the same problems. It is not surprising that they would go to this philosopher who would some day be infamous. While a philosopher, John Locke would give advice on education and so one can say he was also an educational theorist. Again, Lockes conception of education included many things inclusive of the moral, political and physical education of the human being. This is perhaps far different from the ideas that exist today in the realm of education. Also, it is interesting to note that while Locke gave out a lot of advice on education, he really disapproved of educational methods which were generally employed ("Modern," 1998). It has been said that this independence of judgment marked him throughout his life (1998). While Lockes contribution to the ideas of education is quite significant, many like to integrate his thoughts with his other works. Carrig (2001) explains that in Some Thoughts Concerning Education, Lockes treatise on education had never been fully integrated with his more familiar philosophical and political writings.
