these stories are set in various locales around the world, we want to examine what they reveal about America; that is, what kind of country it is, based on the
vision of these authors. Mark Twain is one of the most beloved of American authors, and his tales of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn show us a land where its
seemingly always summertime. But underneath the surface is the darkness of slavery and the risk Huck takes in befriending Jim, a runaway slave. Huck and Jim travel down
the Mississippi, intending to follow the river to its confluence with the Ohio, and then take the Ohio north to free territory. But they are intercepted by men who
are looking for runaway slaves. When they ask Huck whos on the raft with him, he tries to tell them its Jim, but he cant do it: "I didnt
answer up prompt. I tried to, but the words wouldnt come" (Twain 120). Huck has lived up to Jims opinion of him: ""Dah you goes, de ole
true Huck; de ony white genlman dat ever kep his promise to ole Jim" (Twain 119). Twain shows us an America with two faces; a country that keeps slaves
and yet prides itself on equality. This is the America that will face these issues in a bloody Civil War. The portrait of America drawn by Kate Chopin is
concentrated on society and its mores. Her heroine, Edna Pontellier, wants to find out who she really is; like many women even today, she is defined by her relationship
