Family, Juvenile, Housing and Small Claims Courts; the Probate Court, the Appellate Court and the Connecticut Supreme Court (State of CT Judicial Branch, 2011). These courts operate in order
to address the litigation of criminals, addressing family violence issues, and resolving civil matters. The United States District Court of the District of Connecticut provides the arena for
criminal litigations on a federal level throughout the state. The District of Connecticut has eight active judges, six senior judges and 5 magistrate judges, who work in one of
three court houses in the state (Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven) (U.S. District Court, 2011). The federal court system places Connecticut as a part of the Second Circuit,
which includes both Vermont and New York (Western New England School of Law, 2011). The base for the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is in New York
City, but there are satellite hearings that occur in Connecticut and other areas of New York, often through arrangements made with the existing courthouses in larger cities like Hartford.
While the Second Circuit Court is located in New York, there are hearings held in Hartford at the United States Courthouse there. Cases The jurisdiction in cases relating
to lease agreements and housing falls in the hands of the Small Claims Court of Connecticut, based on the fact that the case itself is a civil case and the
damages incurred were less than $5,000 (Small Claims Court, 2010). In this case, a landlord has stated that the tenant gave notice that a lease would not be renewed,
