Careful research and reflection might lead them to write something like the following. When I moved my family from London to the New World, I felt sure it was the right decision. We would be free from the seemingly never-ending wrangles about religion and there was great opportunity for a merchant such as myself to establish a business that could grow without undue interference. We decided to locate at the junction of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, since it seemed like a spot that would have a great deal of trade, which in turn meant that a general store like ours would prosper. We had no idea that it would become a political, and eventually literal, battleground. It seemed to us that every colony was different. We werent part of a coherent whole, just a bunch of individuals, all going in different directions. I suspect we brought much of the prejudice with us from England. But there is no denying that the "traditions and histories" of the various colonies "were as distinct as those of separate countries" (Faragher et al, 2000, p. 134). In addition, there was little contact among people in different areas of the country; travel was difficult and we in Ohio had no reason to try and make friends, for instance, with people in the Carolinas (Faragher et al, 2000).
