distinct advantages to the large-family type of childhood and there are distinct disadvantages. First of all, in a large family, a child who is one of multiple "middle" children, that
is, the fourth or fifth born, hardly ever is the first to do anything. The novelty of first accomplishments, that is, the first step, the first word, the first to
graduate from high school, have become old hat by the time it is the fourth childs turn. It is difficult for a child to have one-on-one time with a
parent or even a parents full attention, as there are always multiple crises that have to be attended to, multiple tasks that need to be accomplished. Also, in a large
family, there is never enough money, even if the parents earn a sizeable income. Therefore, everything, from sports equipment to books to clothes, has to be shared, which, of course,
means the veritable "brand" of the large-family child - "hand-me-down" clothes. In a large family, there is always a lot to do. Clothes that need to be gathered, laundered
and put away, bathrooms to be cleaned, wear-and-tear on the house mended, smudges cleaned off the wall, etc. There are small children to be ferried to school, doctors appointments, and
soccer practice. The list goes on and on and would be impossible unless the children themselves share the load of responsibility and do their assigned household chores. The assigned household
duties for older children generally include watching and tending to younger children. These are the disadvantages. On the other hand, there are also advantages. In general, the advantages are
identical to the disadvantages, just seen from a different perspective. For example, in a large family, middle children hardly ever get to do anything first. In other words, this means
