and new information will help others to prolong their lives. A lot will depend on where a person lives and what resources are available to them. In 2008, the
CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported they are using new technology and new methodologies to measure the number of new HIV infections more accurately. Using this new methodology,
the CDC estimated there would be 56,300 new cases of HIV infections in the United States (CDC 2008). This was substantially higher than the 40,000 estimated using the old methods
(CDC 2008). They also reported that the number of new infections has remained "roughly stable since the late 1990s" (CDC 2008). This is disappointing because the public has been led
to believe the incidence of AIDS was decreasing. A number of medications are now available for helping to control the disease. As the staff at UCSF Medical Center (2007) wrote:
"Drug treatments help reduce the HIV virus in your body, keep your immune system as healthy as possible and decrease the complications you may develop." The major drugs fall under

combination of these drugs is prescribed although there are some drugs that are combinations within themselves, such as Combivir, Trizivir, Epzicom, and Truvada (UCSF Medical Center). As with all
drugs, there may be side-effects with any other these. Some of the side effects, depending on the specific drug, include vomiting, fever, diarrhea, pain, fatigue, nausea, coughing, loss of appetite,
sleep disturbance, pain, chills, fever, rash, extreme tiredness, neuropathy, oral ulcers, headache, and increased risks for infections in certain organs, such as the kidneys or lungs (UCSF Medical Center). Another
