a persons right to die, and has long been a lighting rod of controversy. But through the years, this debate has taken on legal as well as moral significance
that reached a dramatic climax with the very public argument over whether private citizen Terri Schiavo should be kept alive in her vegetative state or have her feeding tube removed
as her husband Michael alleged she would have wanted had she been able to articulate her wishes. Mrs. Schiavo suffered an inexplicable cardiac arrest and acute lack of oxygen
to the brain in February of 1990 at the age of 26, which resulted in being kept alive by artificial means for fifteen years. The tube was removed and
after a nearly two-week battle between her husband, parents, the courts, and pro-life/pro-choice advocacy groups, Terri Schiavo died on March 31, 2005 (Kornblum, 2005). Because of her young age
and seemingly good health at the time of her permanent brain damage, her feelings had not been put into writing regarding any terminal condition she might face. That is
the precisely the purpose of a living will - to speak for the person who has been medically rendered incapable of speaking. The burning question that demands an answer
is: Should living wills be honored in America? A living will is an advance directive that expresses a patients desires in the event of a terminal illness, and does not
