childhood and early adult years. It is book that offers different times and events, times and events that the author remembers and that ultimately mean something to the author. The following paper summarizes the work, discusses some of the characters, and then offers up some possibilities for alternate endings. Living Up the Street by Gary Soto: Summary The story begins when the author is relatively young. It tells the story of his family; his mother, father, and siblings. The author grew up in a very poor section of Fresno, what is often called the barrio wherein the Mexican culture lives. His story takes the reader through many different times in his life. For example, in the beginning the reader learns that his mother can lose her temper and take a belt to the kids. The reader learns that the father works very hard and very long hours and the reader also reads how he experienced an accident at work and then died as a result of the accident, leaving the family very sad and alone. One author notes, "To make ends meet, Angie Soto and the childrens grandparents took what jobs they could find. As Gary and his siblings grew older they, too, worked in the fields and factories of Fresno" (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2008). The story moves on through the authors elementary school years as he struggles to find himself in a world that often seems very white while he is Mexican. He feels out of place and yet also wants to be white in some ways because they seem happy and clean and wealthy. But, at the same time he also learns how to be tough because he has to be tough.
