marvelous, life-affirming book. In creating this book, Buscaglia drew heavily on various speeches that he has given throughout his career. Due to this factor, there is a slight tendency
for Buscaglia to repeat himself in the various chapters, where often the same themes are expounded in slightly different terms. Nevertheless, this is a minor defect since his major theme--one
of love -- bears repeating. Buscaglia also addresses the numerous problems in the US educational system, and, in this writers opinion, is extremely accurate in his assessment. He specifically
objects to requiring that all school children follow the same curriculum and does not see any sense in such regimentation. To prove his point, he gives a telling analogy of
forest animals all being required to learn the same skills. While the bird made "As" in flying, the poor creature broke its wings trying to borrow and could not longer
fly; however, the curriculum committee was quite happy because the bird had at least tried to burrow (Buscaglia 13). As this suggests, Buscaglia paint a picture of public school as
an educational environment where regimentation is more important than natural talents, creativity, or cultivating imagination. Buscaglia pinpoints a common failing in education where adherence to routine is mistaken for
teaching. Rather than emphasizing that a child got 49 questions out of 50 wrong, Buscaglia argues that the teacher should say, "Johnny, you got one right! Bravo" (250). This
