is best for a woman that she be married and have a man in her life. Marriage, and marriage to a good and compatible man, is seen as the best path in life for women. Yet, at the same time the entire story seems to lack the father/husband figure as he is off at war. It is not until the final chapters of the novel that the father/husband comes onto the scene. The following paper analyzes this social expectation concerning women and marriage, and the absence of a male figure in the novel. "Little Women": Absence of the Male Figure In "Little Women" the mother, Mrs. March, argues that it is best for a woman to be married to a good and compatible man. She states, "To be loved and chosen by a good man is the best and sweetest thing which can happen to a woman, and I sincerely hope my girls may know this beautiful experience" (Alcott Chapter 9). Mrs. March is, herself, a very happily married woman although she and her daughters seem to essentially struggle to survive as they live without the husband/father who is away at war. While Mrs. March is clearly indicating that the best and sweetest thing she hopes for her daughters involves a good man and marriage, she is also clearly indicating that there is more to life than simple marriage. She is expressing how a good relationship, not just the institution of marriage, is the important thing. She is not simply telling her daughters they need to marry for that is the only option open to women, but that the true relationship between a man and a woman is beautiful.
