the author. The United Kingdom has had may copyright laws passed over the centuries, the most recent being the The Copyright, Designs and Patents Bill 1988, which superseded The Copyright
Act 1956 (Murphy et al, 1988). Cases such as British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd v Armstrong Patents Co Ltd (1986) had illustrated the way in which this act had become
outdated (McFarlane, 1986) The purpose of this update was primarily to bring copyright protection in line with the developments over the preceding years,
for example the increased use of computers and intellectual property (McFarlane, 1986). However, it also builds in the former protections and deals with literary works (Aplin and Davis, 2009; Bently
and Sherman, 2008). To consider the issue of literary work, along with how they may, or may not be protected, the first
stage is to define what is meant by a literary work. A common definition of any literary work tends to focus on the written word, either as a creative work
or as a study (Lefevere, 1992). Under the 1988 a literary work has a broader definition, it is defined as "any work, other than a dramatic or musical work, which
is written, spoken or sung". A victory would come therefore include a wide range of different subject types, which can include a table compilation, the computer program, or the design
