The social, political, religious and ethnic configurations of
feudalism and the growth of towns in the middle ages was seen as being in
conflict to the beginning of the industrial era. The literature of this
particular era tends to incorporate many of the issues involved within the
transition, including a predominant Christian theme and, or, the inclusion of
spirituality and a reference to antiquity. This 7 page paper explores and
compares a few of the literary works that have come out of that era, including
Sidney's Astrophil And Stella, Book I of Spenser's The Faerie Queene, Milton's
Lycidas and Book IX of Paradise Lost, Pope's The Rape Of The Lock and Swift's

a predominant Christian theme and, or, the inclusion of spirituality and a reference to antiquity. Astrophil and Stella by Sir Phillip Sidney is a sonnet cycle. This
work, and the songs it contains, are one of the great expressions of the "pastoral" mode in English. The sonnet cycle, as a form, became a commonplace achievement of
young poets after Sidney. The entire sonnet cycle is a love poem that utilizes the imagery, symbols and metaphors of the ancient religions. Sydneys purpose was to elaborate
on the feelings and experience of love. There is no plot line outside of a series of experiences, through which the young lovers test their devotion and develop their
sense of self within a love relationship. The sonnet cycle by Sidney is very different from the epic poem, The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. The poem
is filled with allegorical references to the time of chivalry and has been described as an allegorical epic. As outlined in the introduction, Gloriana, the queen of Fairyland, represents
both glory and Queen Elizabeth I, in whose honor twelve knights, who represented the qualities of the chivalric virtues, engage in a series of adventures. The six completed books
relate the adventures of the knights who represented the qualities of holiness, temperance, chastity, friendship, justice, and courtesy. Spensers melodious verse, combined with his undeniably sensuous imagery and conscious
