Mark Twains novel of life on the Mississippi is one of the most famous in American literature, and one of the best loved. The most important literary device in this
book is possibly setting, because Twain recreates life in and near the Mississippi River so vividly that the River itself becomes a character in his books. It is both an
escape and a challenge; an escape because it can carry Huck and Jim to safety, and a challenge because it can be treacherous and difficult to navigate. The action in
the book centers on the River, or comes back to it if the characters go ashore for any reason. But above all, the River is beautiful: "The River looked miles
and miles across. The moon was so bright I could a counted the drift logs that went a-slipping along, black and still, hundreds of yards out from shore. Everything was
dead quiet, and it looked late, and smelt late. You know what I mean -- I dont know the words to put it in" (Twain, 1995). The second device that
makes an impression is the plot and specifically the incident when Huck could turn Jim in to the men who are hunting runaway slaves, but decides not to, because he
realizes that Jim is both a man, not just a black, and his friend (Twain, 1995). This marks Hucks growth into a person who really sees injustice and fights against
