way literature was written and read. "The Odyssey," the more complex of the two, was particularly innovative in terms of its structure and characterizations. Furthermore, while "The Iliad"
introduced the concept of the Homeric hero, "The Odyssey" changed the way a heroic protagonist was portrayed. In this poem, Odysseus is not a one-dimensional symbol of virtue; he
is a mass of complexities. He is strong, courageous, stubborn, proud, practical and occasionally vulnerable. In other words, Odysseus is flawed, but human. This set the tone
for all future literary heroes, who were all the more compelling because of their shortcomings, because these were traits with which readers could easily relate. Also, in "The Odyssey,"
Homer revealed how literature reflected the history and society of its time in a way no other author had before. He incorporated Greek mythology, historical events, social and gender
attitudes into the poem into his creative vision of life and the world around him. In "The Odyssey," Homer elevated literature to its highest level and transformed it from
a passing folk tradition into a timeless art form. "The Odyssey" is deceiving because it begins with the tried-and-true lyrical poetic structure of the Muse to introduce its tale: "Sing
in me, Muse, and through me tell the story / of that man skilled in all ways of contending, / the wanderer, harried for years on end, / after he
plundered the stronghold / on the proud height of Troy" (I 1-5). However, it deviates from conventional literary structure by not introducing the protagonist until Book V, where the
assembly of Gods are meeting to discuss Odysseus fate, following his eight-year exile, his punishment for blinding Kyklopes, the son of the sea god Poseidon. In his dramatic entrance
