look inward, to reflect upon the cataclysmic events that had taken place and to weigh their impact upon the fragile human psyche. Virginia Woolf joined literary counterparts like James
Joyce and T.S. Eliot in transforming her pen into a scalpel that enabled her to probe deeply into thoughts, feelings and perceptions. Her prose did not effortlessly flow from
beginning to end; instead, her "stream of consciousness" texts were occasionally disjointed (intentionally so) and somewhat confusing to the readers because they represented not objective facts but subjective perceptions of
people and events. Woolf sought to recreate the human experience as it actually is, not as artists wished it would or could be. Virginia Woolf has earned her
rightful place as one of the founders of the modernist literary movement, and Jacobs Room (1922), one of her earliest efforts, lays its impressionist foundation. The work itself is
nearly completely devoid of plot. It is the unconventional coming-of-age story of Jacob Flanders, a sensitive young Englishman who meets his death in The Great War. Unlike classical
protagonists, Jacob exists not in the center of the action but always on the periphery (Hafley 48). The thoughts and observations expressed in the novel are not Jacobs own,
but are those of the people who inhabit his universe, just as in life. Despite the apparent lack of plot, Jacobs Room is structurally held together by Woolfs innovative
