important themes. This paper considers how an authors use of death, chaos and villainy bring other aspects of the work into focus. Discussion Death as a plot device: Death can
be noble, sad, horrific, or even transcendental. In A Good Man is Hard to Find it is all of these; in Death of a Salesman it is a melancholy end
to a disappointing life, but a liberating force at the same time. In Good Man, death is the end to which the story naturally progresses. There are so many clues
foreshadowing the murder of the family that any reader whos surprised by the ending hasnt been paying attention. Among the foreshadowing is the Grandmothers mention that she doesnt want
to go to Florida because a criminal named The Misfit has escaped from prison and might be headed there; the we have her choice of wardrobe for the trip and
OConnors description of it: she had changed into a navy blue dress with small white polka dots so that "[I]n case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the
highway would know at once that she was a lady" (OConnor). Then they pass an old plantation with a small cemetery containing "five or six graves"-and there are six of
them (OConnor). When they stop for lunch, Red Sammy mentions three men who stopped and filled up with gas, and ran off without paying (OConnor). Then the grandmother says they
