the psychology of aging and the emptiness of one womans life. This paper argues that the flower imagery changes throughout the story, and that a reader should pay attention to
what Hayashi is telling us about the characters and the situation through the flowers. Flower imagery is a wise choice because it conveys a sense of fragility and impermanence, and
thus resembles the main relationship in the story. Discussion The story can be summarized in a few words: an aging woman, Kin, gets ready to meet and old lover, and
the reunion is bittersweet, even unpleasant, and both people realize they cannot ever be as they once were. That is the basic outline, but the story is infinitely richer than
this, and far more moving. The title is the first thing that draws our attention. A chrysanthemum is a fall flower, blooming as the year draws to a close. We
know without having to be told that Kin, the protagonist of the story, is no longer young. She is the chrysanthemum of the title. Now in her 50s, she considers
her self an old woman, and she is trying desperately to hold onto her looks. (Today of course people in their 50s are not considered old, but in 1945 thinking
was much different.) There are other aspects to the mum that remind us of Kin. First, a flower of any kind is beautiful, but practically speaking, its useless. It
scents the air for a few days and its very nice to look at, but it doesnt work, doesnt bring in money, doesnt help with the chores-a flower is purely
decorative, and so is Kin. Then too, mums are one of the gaudiest of all flowers. Theyre large and brightly colored, and very festive-again, this is a suitable analogy for
