ELL student who has participated in English language instruction both in her home country and in the United States since 1st grade. Beth has been living in this country
for one year and is originally from Spain. Beth has average intelligence and does not demonstrate deficiencies in any other content area except in the application of reading.
Beth has demonstrated struggles with vocabulary knowledge, reading confidence, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Reports from her second grade teacher stated that English was not the primary language spoken
in the home and that Maria had struggles with word confusion, especially in relation to words with multiple meanings and words that sound alike (homophones and homographs).
Beth demonstrated a high degree of functioning in content areas where reading skills are not required. Beth, for example, had highly developed mathematics skills, especially in relation to
the application of algebraic expressions and the use of fractions. Beths science teacher maintained that she did well in elements of the science class in which hands on
experiences were utilized and she showed a considerable interest both in the activities of the class and the use of the Internet for obtaining research. Her reading skills hindered
her ability to complete tasks. Informal Literacy Assessments Spelling Development Beth completed the Primary Spelling Inventory. Though she was
