law and all occupations in between. Good communication skills which include listening skills are essential to be successful in any occupation or in general in everyday experiences and choices.
Listening is an active exercise, not a passive one. Listening is a highly active and very demanding skill. Individuals need to practice to strengthen their ability to listen
more accurately, more effectively, and more efficiently. THE NATURE OF LISTENING Many individuals think that listening is a passive activity, but it is not. The true act of listening involves
allowing yourself to open up to opinions and thoughts of other people (Beaverson). Really good listeners actually stop everything that they are doing and dedicate themselves to give the
speaker their full undivided attention (Beaverson). As stated by Beaverson, Kelly J. Watkins who is the author of Listening: The Silent Side of Communication says, "Its also important to
watch the speakers body language. This includes maintaining eye contact" (Beaverson). It is also important for the listener to watch their own body language. Keeping an open posture,
and leaning toward the speaker gives the impression that the listener is eager to hear what is being said (Beaverson). An effective and efficient listener spends 70 percent of
his or her time listening and only about 30 percent of his or her time talking (Beaverson). TYPES OF INEFFECTIVE LISTENERS If you really want to learn about listening the
