to approach this is probably to think about it carefully and see what we already know. The link between law and democracy is obvious: the U.S., as well as other
Western democracies, are nations of laws. That is, societies in these countries work because the citizens understand that they are subject to the rule of law. The opposite of this
is anarchy where there is no law at all. So, democracies work because their citizens obey the laws of the land; and the laws of the land support democracy. That
link is clear. What about a link between democracy and government policy? Here things get trickier, since all governments make policies but not all governments are democracies. This line
of reasoning soon takes us out of our depth, so we should probably restrict the discussion to the United States. The U.S. is a democracy, so any government policies enacted
are based on the principle that they have been created with the consent of the governed. However, this is clearly not true: its fair to say that few Americans, if
any, are going to agree with the way Congressional members vote themselves hefty raises in the middle of the night, without asking constituents what they think of the idea. Its
also true that the government sometimes refuses to act in accordance with the public will: for example, poll after poll has shown that over three-quarters of the American people want
