by many, including young school children. But why? Why was this address so important and why it is remembered? Other questions crop up concerning who Lincoln was actually addressing
during this important time in American history and why did he use such flowery language. Also, what was Lincolns state of mind? What might he have been feeling? The audience
and the cultural differences between what existed then and what is present now are startling. In reading Lincolns speech today, the typical American might not truly understand what he meant.
His rhetoric is beyond comprehension for some of the populous. For example, the term "score" is not common knowledge today. But was it appropriate at the time? Abraham Lincoln began:
"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal"
(Lincoln PG). While his rhetoric may have been rather different, it was probably appropriate. Further, the meaning and emotions behind the words is most relevant. One can look at
what had come before, on the day he made the speech, and surmise what his emotions might have been. Many like to think of men, particularly presidents, as being void
of emotion. They make vital decisions for the country and should make them based on sound advice and consideration, not emotion. However, they would be wrong in such thinking. Who
does not get a tear in their eye when the recite the Pledge of Allegiance or hear the national anthem played at a baseball game? Grown men are known to
get emotional. The same was likely true for President Lincoln. His emotions and state of mind were perhaps inextricable. However, it helps to know something about the audience he was
