of what many might perceive as an positive political career, Lincoln had his share of critics. The issues that he faced during his years of political service, including being
elected to the presidency twice, had significant political, social, economic and international ramifications. Critics of Lincoln have suggested that his actions against slavery were driven by political and
economic interests rather than the morality he voiced against slavery as an institution. At the same time, many critics of his day recognized that while slavery might be morally
wrong, few could accept the induction of blacks into the populations of free whites. While many Northerners could accept a stand against slavery, few would consider hiring blacks and
many scoffed at the idea of sharing housing, schools and public institutions with populations of freed slaves. Because of the range of both social and constitutional issues that
Lincoln faced, it was not surprising that his critics denied his efficacy as a president. But even in light of criticism, Lincoln demonstrated the most effective moves that he
could have made, including invoking war against the South, the Emancipation Proclamation, and determining the need for Constitutional changes, including the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. Though some Abolitionist
critics considered Lincoln far too moderate, Lincoln clearly addressed the major issues of the day, working towards a free America and transforming the focus of a divided nation. II.
