This has become a classic, with its ever-timely themes and insightful exploration into human nature. The main character of this story is Marlow, and in terms of limitations and boundaries, Marlow is perhaps the best example of how they are imposed. Marlow is overtly racist, and therefore his opinions and ideas are often quite harsh to the modern reader. What is even more important to realize however, is that Marlow serves as a voice for Conrad, thereby giving credence to the limitations and boundaries of the era. Even though Conrad is clearly trying to portray the immense struggles of the African people, his racism is an evidently unrealized aspect of himself. Marlow/Conrad is nearly unaware of the racist attitudes he holds and perpetuates. The issue of racism therefore serves to be a very powerful limitation in this story, and as we read with the benefit of experience, we understand even more succinctly just how limiting racism actually is and the damage it has done historically. Just as the character of Marlow is important to this theme of limitation, so too is the setting. Consider the irony of the Congo River, which is described as the antithesis of the Thames, which is the location from which Marlow tells this story. We can liken the differences of the rivers to Africa itself. Africa could be considered to be, from an outsiders point of view, like the Congo - dark and wild.
