Lillian was perhaps, first and foremost, a nurse, she was also many other things. She was a supporter of people who struggled, from African Americans to the impoverished. She was a woman who educated and advocated for many causes. More than a nurse, Lillian Wald was a woman of strength and resolve. The following paper examines the life and work of this woman. Lillian D. Wald: Life and Works "Lillian Wald was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 10th March, 1867. Wald became a nurse and inspired by the work of Jane Addams and Ellen Starr at Hull House in Chicago, she joined Mary Brewster to establish the Henry Street Settlement in New York City in 1893" (Lillian Wald, 2006). She was born into a wealthy Jewish family that came from Germany (Krain, 2002). She received her education at Miss Cruttendens English-French Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies in Rochester, New York (Krain, 2002). Although she actually wanted to get into a medical school she apparently compromised and enrolled in New York Hospitals School of Nursing (Krain, 2002). When she began actively nursing she took on many tasks because there was no one else to do them and she saw a need (Krain, 2002). "She recruited another nurse and began working out of a fifth floor apartment at 27 Jefferson Street. They made themselves available to anyone who needed help" (Krain, 2002). As they worked they generally charged very little, if anything, to those who needed their care (Krain, 2002). Because of this she would become very well known as a woman who was the immigrants friend at a time when immigrants struggled against all odds and conditions (Krain, 2002). ...
