Heart of Darkness is widely acknowledge as a literary classic that provides considerable psychological insight into the workings of the human mind. Conrads description of Kurtzs descent into barbarity, in
many ways, foreshadows the atrocities that were occurred in the twentieth century. Throughout the novel, Conrad contrasts images of light and darkness to convey his thematic message, which is that
instinctual urges that compel men towards antisocial behavior lurk in the recesses of the human psyche. Examination of the novel shows that Conrad frequently associated this darkness with the African
continent and Africans. Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has taken this position, arguing that Conrads use of imagery in the novel portrays African society as symbolic darkest urges of the
human subconscious, that is, the primitive, instinctual urges that must be overcome and suppressed in order for the social cooperation of civilized behavior to be possible. While this observation is
true, it is also true that Conrad also indicates that the same barbarity and primitive urges he associates with African also defined England at one time. Marlow tells his fellow
passengers on board the Nellie as it sails up the Thames that England "has been one of the dark places of the earth" (Conrad 67). He goes on to describe
