a home for three relatives, her great aunt, great uncle and grandmother, during Barbaras adolescence and early adulthood. When Barbara was 18, her parents divorced and her mother remarried,
bringing a stepbrother and stepsister into the family dynamics. Barbaras childhood home was actually in the Jamaica Plain, an urban area noted for ethnic diversity and a large population
of lower-middle class factory workers. Barbaras mother worked in a metalwork factory and her father was a dockworker. Infancy Barbara related the fact that
when she was born, her parents had already had five boys and were hoping for a daughter. She told the story of family members, including her great aunt and
grandmother, who attended her birth and were excited that the family finally had a girl. Barbaras mother smoked and drank throughout her pregnancy with Barbara and so
she was born 4 weeks early and spent two weeks in an incubator at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Barbara was underweight, born at only 5 pounds, and
had compromised lung development. As a result, she had continuous care for the first two weeks of life. Barbara said that her mother often described her as a
"content" baby, saying that she often preferred watching her brothers play from a playpen, perhaps because she felt protected. As a result of her time spent in the playpen,
Barbara did not walk until she was almost 2 years old and did not use her first words until she was almost 30 months old, leading to comments by family
members that she was developmentally delayed. Barbaras pediatrician chalked her late development up to her mothers tendency to put her in the playpen and not interact with the child,
