of his childhood demonstrate the progression of lifespan development on his personality. Developmental psychologists, including John Watson and John Bowlby, have recognized the impacts of environment, action and learned
behaviors on the progression of personality through the lifespan. Poes early life was marked by repeated loss, and this influenced his dark sensibilities and expressions of guilt from a young
age. Both Watson and Bowlby recognized the significance of loss and grieving during formative years. While Watson argued that experiences relate directly to personality development through learning, Bowlby
addressed the specific issue of loss relative to maternal attachment. Poes personal history suggests the influence of repeated losses relative to maternal attachment theory that determined some of the
characteristics of Poes personality later in life. Poe was born to actors Elizabeth and David Poe, Jr. on January 19, 1809 in Boston. His father deserted the family
soon afterwards, and Poe developed a deep emotional attachment to his beloved mother, whose premature death in 1811 at the age of 24 left her son with deep emotional wounds
that never completely healed. It is believed that there is a little of Elizabeth in all of Poes female characterizations. One of his biographers contends, "She became... the
prototype of all the absent yet unforgettable women in his poetry and fiction, those encrypted yet deathless ladies who excited both dread and longing" (Kennedy 533). Poes father never
