whatever cause their leader deemed fit for pursuit. The following paper provides a brief look at the life of a Roman Soldier in the first of the Persian Wars concerning
one small moment in the larger scheme of the war. Life of a Roman Soldier: Persian Wars As mentioned, the life
of a soldier was difficult and this was perhaps due to marching conditions, living conditions, and threats of death from desertion. While Roman soldiers in more ancient times engaged in
soldiering for periods of time, these conditions changed: ". At first men were asked to leave their farms for short periods of time to fight. Later men stayed in the
army full time" (The Roman Soldier, 2007). In this situation, this scenario, the soldier is one of the iron cavalry, a type
of soldier position that was later developed for the Roman soldier but clearly a soldier that was based on ancient styles of soldiering. A member of the iron cavalry was
a man with shield and spear and lance and ultimately all the metal protection they could possess. The cavalry was incredibly successful in beating the Persian forces in the battle
under examination. In a diary excerpt it is noted that "in the ancient days bows and arrows were despised, although all other
