the fact, education is something that occurs over an entire lifetime. Once an individual reaches adulthood much of their education is achieved informally. Every experience, in fact, could be regarded as a form of education. There are also various formal methods and venues through which continuing education can be approached. The intent of this paper is to describe these methods and venues for the purpose of facilitating lifelong learning in adult education. Between 1995 and 2001, the demand for adult education increased six percent (U.S. Department of Education, 2006). Gilmore (2008) observes that in the 2006-2007 school year over 1.15 million adults were "enrolled in programs designed to provide diverse educational opportunities to meet adult learner needs" (p. 30). Practically all career paths, after all, require a continuing commitment to education. Indeed, in 2005 work related courses joined with personal interest courses to be the most popular forms of adult education (U.S. Department of Education, 2006). The U.S. Department of Education (2006) reports that in 2005 work related courses comprised twenty-seven percent of all adult education activities. Personal interest courses came in at a close second comprising twenty-one percent. Part-time college and university degree programs, in turn, comprised only five percent of adult education courses in this time period (U.S. Department of Education, 2006). One way to approach the continuing commitment to education is to develop a focused plan identifying such educational arenas as critical thinking, computer literacy, information literacy, and career specific informatics as critical components in individual lifelong learning plans.
