Potter books have engendered within some sectors of the Christian community, as noted by ApologeticsIndex (2003), one of the life lessons which JK Rowling studiously avoids is encouraging her readers
towards paganism - or, indeed, any religious belief system. Despite the prevalence of magic, wizardry and mythical creatures which permeate Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, the experiences which Harry
has and the basic lessons which he learns are to do with growing up, human relationships and the acquisition of wisdom and independence: in other words, lessons which are applicable
to all young people as they progress towards maturity.
It is notable, too, that Rowling sets these lessons in a framework which is familiar to young people by using recognisable conventions of childrens fiction. For example, the idea that
the Dursleys could keep a child in a cupboard is acceptable within the context of the novel: we are reminded of classic tales such as Cinderella, and there is sufficient
humour in the authors treatment of the Dursley family for us to suspend our disbelief, aware that at some point Harry, as the hero, will come into his own and
thwart the "wicked step-family". By the time the reader has progressed to Order of the Phoenix, we are dealing with much darker, more adult issues, and the imprisoned child would
no longer be reminiscent of a fairy-tale but of criminal child abuse.
In Sorcerers Stone, however, Rowling is using familiar stereotypes as an introduction to the more pertinent lessons regarding human relationships which she incorporates into the later stages of the
